Biography:

Born to a doctor and a socialite, Sekyung had an easy childhood growing up, and even if she was mostly raised by nanny’s and a staff, she never experienced detachment issues from her parents. It saved her from the times when her mother was a parent and her overbearing ways, towards her older brother at least. He seemed to get the bulk of the pressure to grow up well and become a doctor like his father and marry a woman of equal and social standing. For Sekyung she just had to do well enough to not cause trouble and be seen but not heard. Although sometimes she wasn’t even seen, and she would hide out in the kitchen with the kitchen staff and have tea parties.

Because of the lack of pressure to grow up a certain kind of way and without expectations (except to get good grades which while she was young was never a problem), she was free to explore paths of life she could only dream of if she had been first born, or had been her mother. She never cared for fancy dinner parties, as most children didn’t, sometimes she wanted to be a gardener, a maid, a chef, a dog walker, a nanny. She even spent a day dressed in black tights, a white button up and her brother’s coat and tie pretending to be a butler. These may not be high goals for any child but because the staff always seemed happy she wanted to do it too.

As she grew older some of things that she thought she wanted to do faded, such as a maid; it was more desirable to pick up after a puppy then clean her brother’s awful underwear. However she still hid away in the kitchen, no longer having tea parties though but learning. The cooks, having known the young girl since birth were more than happy to show her how to make stew, or her father’s favorite dessert. She would soon be the one allowed to make her parent’s breakfast, of course without them knowing. However seeing how happy they were to enjoy it and go on with their days gave her more joy than she could imagine. She decided on the career she wanted from then on out, she wanted to be a chef.

No one at school understood it though. The posh private school classmates looked at her with confusion.

“Why would you want to make your own meals? That’s what the staff is for!”

“No self-respecting person decides to become that.”

“Shouldn’t you just be like your mother?”

They said it with such distaste and laughed at her dreams, it truly made her rethink things. Should she be like her mother and marry a man with a good job and just do nothing but look good for social events and make appearances at charity galas? She could think of no worst fate than that. However it made her think of the worst things her parents would say if they knew this was what she wanted to do. Even worse, her older brother was getting ready for college, and her mother was beginning to shift her focus on to Sekyung. She didn’t know how she would survive.

The time between then and college felt so long. Debutant balls, cricket matches (she hated that with a passion), those charity galas and social events, her mother even made her run for class president. She hated that, people paid too much attention to her and it took up so much time when all she wanted to do was run home and bake a batch of cookies. Oh and the cookies, the ones she was never allowed to eat because her mother said it would make her fat. She was miserable, limited time to herself made limited time around the staff, which made her dream suffer.

Though it was her brother who she had spent so little time with in her childhood, which made her feel she shouldn’t give up. She thought her brother would grow up to be stiff and always do what mother said he should do and that in college he would be that top scholar who was a premed major and meet a pretty girl who was as rich as he was and would be content with having three kids and being a house wife.

Well from the letters he sent her, he rebelled. He switched his major to something that she remembered her mother screaming about (she might’ve also fainted), discovered the wonders of marijuana (he also sent her a recipe for special brownies that she never tried) and never met that nice girl. He met many nice girls (his words) but none of them he seemed to stick around for her to remember the names. He seemed to be having a blast at… What was it called? Yonsei?

It was Sekyung’s first choice school and she got in (her mother also screamed and she was sure she fainted that time), and of course her major was easy to decide on. Culinary arts was a given.
